Tuesday was our first appointment with Dr. Russell… 10 ½ weeks. Once at the office, we filled out the necessary paperwork and waited for our name to be called. Once in the exam room we chatted with the nurse in regards to medications and my experience being pregnant and delivering you. When Dr. Russell finally came in, it was time for the actual exam, but not before more questions. I asked about continuing to run and whether or not a half marathon would be possible on November third. Dr. Russell said we could discuss that at a later appointment, but she didn’t see why not. I discussed the little aches and pains associated with this pregnancy and we all had a good laugh when she remembered my labor experience with you…including a sleeping pill that kick started my labor (which at the time was anything but humorous). After all of the questions and answers, we were ready to hear the heartbeat. Dr. Russell prepared everything and listened to my heart, looked in my ears etc. and then onto the heart beat. It was difficult to find, she asked lots more questions, and finally resorted to a pelvic exam. She tried of the heartbeat again…no luck. I could tell she was worried. I was afraid that since my nausea had declined over the last two weeks, that maybe something had gone wrong. As I changed I could hear the nurse call in an order for a “viability” ultrasound. We had to go to the hospital for the ultrasound and waited to be called back. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. When Vicky led us to the ultrasound room, I wasn’t sure what to expect…baby or no baby?! Daddy claims that as soon as the device was on my tummy he could see a baby. It wasn’t until a few uncomfortable silent moments that Vicky said she saw a heartbeat and a squirmy baby! She predicted that to be the reason Dr. Russell had a tough time hearing a heartbeat. Vicky turned the screen towards me and I too was able to see a baby that looked just like you! Teeny-tiny little arms and legs moving like crazy! It was really cool, and very emotional. After the appointment I had to return to the clinic for blood work etc. which was good news!
After the appointment and blood work I ran to Wal-Mart to print a few pictures from the ultrasound. I made a special princess picture just for Big Sister Garrity! Then we headed to Grandma and Grandpa Bishop’s to wish Grandpa a Happy 73rd Birthday, and of course share our good news!
